Susan “Sue” Kathleen Ivory
June 25, 1945 – January 7, 2026
Susan “Sue” Kathleen Ivory was born in Alturas, California, in the far northeastern corner of Modoc County, a place that shaped her spirit for life. Descended from early pioneer ranching families who settled Modoc in the 1870s, Sue grew up on remote ranches and cow camps, developing a fierce independence, strong work ethic, and deep love for the high desert country of sage, juniper, and lava rock she always called home.
Sue spent her youth in California and Oregon, graduating high school in Redmond, Oregon. Rodeo was woven into the fabric of her family, and it was no surprise that Sue’s life followed the rhythms of ranching, horses, and hard work. She later moved to Arizona, where she raised her children and built a life rooted in honesty, resilience, and self-reliance. Sue worked many jobs throughout her life, ultimately retiring from Fort Huachuca, where she held great respect for the military.
After retirement, Sue found joy in house-sitting, swimming, reading, creating stained glass, and returning west to visit the places and people she loved. She was known for her sharp wit, remarkable memory, quiet loyalty, and unwavering honesty. Sue lived by “The Big 10,” spoke her mind freely, and loved deeply—often without fanfare.
Sue passed away peacefully on January 7, 2026, in Bisbee, Arizona, after a lengthy illness. Though she lived many places, her heart never left Modoc.
Sue is survived by her daughter, Shannon (Jay) Burris; her son, Shane Sample; her grandchildren Joshua Paul, Blaine & Seana Burris, Laura Line, Tiffany Sample, and Tanner Peters; and three great-grandchildren.
Sue will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
