Marie Sloup, 87 On Sunday, May 21, 2023 Marie Sloup went up into Jesus’ loving arms.
Marie was born on August 1, 1935 in New York City. Marie grew up in the Yorkville neighborhood in Manhattan. She graduated from Julia Richman High School and then married Henry Kubik. Marie and Henry moved to Astoria in Queens, New York City where they raised 2 sons Henry Jr. and Ron. Henry Sr. passed away in 1966 and from then on Marie raised her 2 boys as a single mother. In 1974 Marie and her boys moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho. After spending one really cold winter in Idaho, she sought a warm climate and moved to Scottsdale, Arizona in 1974. Marie worked for Sentry Insurance for many years, and then Scottsdale Memorial Hospital, from which she retired in 2000. Having visited Sierra Vista in her travels throughout Arizona, and following her sister Vera, she decided to move to Sierra Vista in 2001, and has resided there ever since.
Marie’s parents were immigrants from Czechoslovakia, and in her youth she was active in various Czech-American organizations in New York. Marching in the Memorial Day parade on First Avenue every year, performing Czech dances in traditional costume, engaging in calisthenics with D.A. Sokol, were an important part of her life. Marie was a good singer, and performed in amateur light comedic operas at the Bohemian National Hall in New York. Her love of music and singing did not end when she moved to Arizona. Marie joined the Blessed Sacrament church in Phoenix and was an active member of the choir there for many years, worked in the church office. and made many life-long friends there. Once she moved to Sierra Vista she joined Our Lady of the Mountains church and continued her vocal endeavors in the choir.
Marie loved mountains and the scenery of the west. Taking a scenic drive was her favorite leisure activity. Some of her favorite places were the Grand Tetons in Wyoming, the Beeline Highway, Payson and the Mogollon Rim, and above all the beautiful Huachuca Mountains.
Marie is survived by sons Henry and Ron Kubik, sister Vera Hylsky, daughter-in-law Janet Kubik, grandchildren Chris, Elaine, Mike and Matt Kubik, nephews Dave Hylsky and Pete Cadra, niece Caren Cadra, and her BFF Cy Niezgodzki.
