Margaret Hilda Sharpe Younger, 94, died Wednesday, May 3, 2017, in the loving company of family and friends at the Life Care Center of Sierra Vista. Margaret was born Dec. 9, 1922 in Burlington, North Carolina to Robert A. Sharpe, a sales consultant for Red Goose Shoes, and Hilda Garbee Sharpe, a consummate homemaker.
Among Margaret’s favorite childhood memories was riding Frisky, the pony she shared with her three siblings. Like her mother, Margaret made homemaking her profession, majoring in home economics at Greensboro College, where she graduated in 1944. She taught school for two years and worked for the North Carolina Library Commission before marrying Ralph Kendall Younger, also from Burlington, on March 24, 1947. During her husband’s long career as an Army officer, Margaret lived in eight states, Germany and Turkey. The couple moved to Fort Huachuca in 1975 and remained in Sierra Vista after Col. Younger’s retirement the following year.
Margaret relished her roles as an Army wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She enjoyed cooking, baking and entertaining, and often treated guests to lavish cocktail parties, delicious meals and artistic table settings. Margaret was also an accomplished seamstress and a tireless volunteer. Wherever she lived, she donated her time to numerous military and community organizations, including the Red Cross and the Fort Huachuca Officers and Civilians Wives Clubs, Retired Wives/Spouses Club, post chapel, thrift shop and museum.
Survivors include her two children and their spouses, Terri Younger Renwick and John Renwick of Hereford, and Robert E. (Bob) Younger and Sandra Millers Younger of Lakeside, California; two granddaughters and their spouses, Lauren Younger Nagel and Mark Nagel of Redwood City, California, and Kendall Younger and Ryan Vaughan of Milpitas, California; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Alice Sharpe, of Raleigh, North Carolina; and a sister-in-law, Faye Younger Alexander, of Burlington, North Carolina, as well as many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Margaret’s life will be held Saturday, May 20, 2017 at 10 a.m. at Jensen’s Sierra Vista Mortuary, 5515 AZ-92, Sierra Vista.
