Joan was born on May 29, 1932 in Brunswick, Missouri to John and Ilah Fletcher, and passed away at her home in Sierra Vista on January 15, 2019.
Joan was married to her husband, Frederick S. Mataya on June 7, 1952 until the time of his death on 18 April 2011.
She loved her life as a military wife and mother, and was an avid reader, loved sewing, tending her roses, working crossword puzzles, and watching hummingbirds.
Joan was preceded in death by her sisters, Audrey and Donna Mae.
Joan is survived by her daughters, Marsha (Dee) Calicoat of Clayton, Washington, Patricia (Sid) Quintana of Sierra Vista, Paula (Mike) Miller of Sierra Vista; son Frederick S. Mataya Jr. (Pam) of Lake Stevens, Washington; grandchildren, Amber Calicoat, Amanda Calicoat, Joanna Dahl, Major U.S. Army Zachary Quintana (Angela), Emily Mataya, and Benjamin Mataya; great-grandchildren Taylla, Tanessa, Isabella, Silas, Karis, and Daniel; and many extended family members.
Joan was affectionately known as "The Ancient One" by her great-grandchildren, a term of endearment which she treasured.
During the last two years of her life, Joan was cared for by her daughters, Paula, Patricia, Marsha, and their husbands.
During the last nine months, she also received gentle and loving care from Casa de La Paz Hospice Service.
Joan's family would like to extend their warmest thanks to Melissa, Loida, all staff members, and volunteers, Ellie and Dana, for their love and support through a very difficult time.
Joan will be laid to rest alongside her husband during a private ceremony at Southern Arizona Veterans' Memorial Cemetery.
Mom, you will be in our hearts forever, we're glad you’re with Dad once again, and we know we now have a gentle soul watching over us always.
