Ellen Grombacher, passed away on January 14, a month before her 94th birthday. Born in Berlin, Germany, in 1925, she immigrated to the United States with her parents and sister in 1939. They settled in Chicago, where Ellen graduated from Hyde Park High School and met future husband Gerd "GG" Grombacher. They were married in 1946 after GG returned from World War II.
They became an Army family when GG was called back to active duty in 1950. Ellen embraced her role as an army officer's wife, traveling to many posts before settling in Sierra Vista when GG retired in 1982. Ellen was a Scout leader, Red Cross and thrift shop volunteer.
She loved to travel, had a green thumb, was a mom to numerous family dogs and cats, was a consummate party planner, and was an accomplished bowler well into her 80's.
Predeceased by GG in 2006, she is survived by children Betty Sue Shane (Joel), Kerry Grombacher (Carrie Hood), Julie Waller (Rick), grandson Isaac Grombacher (Susie), and great grandchildren Nathan, Lily and Noah Grombacher.
Private burial at the Ft. Huachuca Old Post Cemetery on February 1, followed by a celebration of life reception at the Peacock Restaurant from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the United Way Grombacher Assistance Program, Sierra Vista Symphony or Ft. Huachuca Museum.
Many thanks to the staff at BeeHive Homes for Ellen’s care over the past 3 1/2 years.
