Eileen Sywassink Obituary

Eileen Marjorie Sywassink

12/30/1931 - 04/12/2026

Longtime Sierra Vista resident Eileen Sywassink, 94, passed away peacefully on April 12, 2026, in Sierra Vista, Arizona. Born on December 30, 1931 in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in Hancock, she grew up in many Michigan towns before the family settled in Lawton, Michigan, where she graduated from Lawton High School. Eileen followed in her parents' footsteps to become a school teacher. She had degrees in education from Western Michigan University and the University of Michigan, preparing her for a career as an elementary school teacher in Michigan and Arizona. The family moved from Michigan to Arizona in 1963 to live in Douglas and moved to Sierra Vista in 1964. Most of her teaching career was at Carmichael Elementary School  where she taught third graders.

Eileen met the love of her life Donald on a five-week summer college mission trip to Alpine, Tennessee in 1951. On the day of her college graduation in 1953, Don presented her with an engagement ring. They married in June 1954 and celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary last year.

Eileen was a devoted member of her community and faith. She was a charter member of the Sierra Vista United Methodist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher and church historian. Her deep faith inspired her to serve as a lay preacher with the Methodist church, and in her later years, she led Sunday chapel services at Mountain View Gardens. She also belonged to a number of organizations, including the Lions Club and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

A woman of many interests, Eileen loved reading and writing and began keeping a daily diary at the age of thirteen. She enjoyed games and jigsaw puzzles and participated in a writer's group at Mountain View Gardens. She had a lifelong affection for her cats and cherished her collections of cat-themed items, butterflies, and frogs. After retiring, Eileen and her husband Don embraced adventure by traveling across the United States and Canada in their motorhome and attended many Moore family and high school reunions, visiting friends and relatives along the way.

Eileen is survived by her husband Donald; her children and their spouses: Jon (Larry Seubert), Debbie Hruschka, and Mark (Diane); and granddaughter Denise Hruschka. She was predeceased by her parents, Alva and Vivian Moore; her brother, Robert Moore; and her sister, Nona Moore. Many thanks to all of her caregivers in her final years.

A Celebration of Life service for Eileen and her husband Don will be held on May 19 at the Sierra Vista United Methodist Church at 2:30 pm. A service will also be held at Mountain View Gardens at 10:30 am that day with their fellow residents.

Eileen's kindness and dedication to helping others will be remembered fondly by all who knew her. May her memory bring comfort to those she touched throughout her remarkable life.
